For best results begin with clean, dry hair in your natural texture. Separate your hair to begin working on the bottom section. I typically separate my hair into thirds but depending on how thick your hair is you may want to do more or fewer sections.

For each section, apply a heat protectant and brush out any knots. I used TRESemme Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Leave-In Spray.

Straighten your hair in 1-2 inch sections depending on the thickness of your hair.

Continue straightening in this way until you get to the top section of your head. I am using a CHI 1″ flat iron.

Once the bottom two sections are complete tie them into a loose, low pony. That way you won’t get it confused with the hair that has already been straightened. Then, take the top section out of the clip and decide on your part. I will be doing a center part.

Apply a smoothing serum to eliminate frizz. I used BioSilk Silk Therapy.

Apply a light misting of hairspray to keep it pin straight all day and tame fly-aways. I used TRESemme Tres Two Spray in Extra Hold.

Brush out your hair one last time and you are finished!

Step 1: The first step in any hairstyle involving a heat tool is to prep your hair. I used TRESemme Keratin Smooth Heat Protection Shine Spray first, followed by a light misting of TRESemme Ultra Fine Mist Hair Spray. I find that prepping my hair with hairspray helps the curls to hold better. The secret to a classic wave hairstyle is a small barrel curling iron, a clip-less one that is. I will be using my Cortex 4 in 1 curling iron set with the smallest barrel which is a 1/2-1″. Now on to the fun part!

Step 2: I started off by pulling half of my hair up so that I could start with the bottom section of hair first. The key is to work with smaller sections, about an inch wide, and curl each section going away from either side of your face. My curling iron is set to 290 degrees and, I hold each section for 10-15 seconds.

Steps 3, 4, & 5: Before you let your curl go, hold it in your hand for about 10 seconds and hair spray it so that way it has time to cool down and holds its shape. Now you can curl the rest of your hair!

Step 6: After you are done curling your hair, take a hair brush and gently run the brush through your curls. I know this seems like the perfect way to ruin all the time you just spent curling your hair, but trust me this will give you the perfect wave!

Step 7: Finish off with some hairspray and voila! The perfect classic wave is complete!

Using your brush, give your hair a deep side part.

Curl all of your hair in the same direction on each side towards your face. The smaller the barrel of your curler, the more wavy it’ll be in the end. Try your best to have all of your curls be super structured and symmetrical (ie look the same!).

Once all your hair is all curled you should look something like this. Usually perfectly curled hair is not flattering, but for this technique, it’s necessary!

After the curls have cooled completely, use your brush to gently comb out your curls. If your hair likes to hold onto curl, you may need to do this more than once.

Set with your favorite hairspray and/or shine spray.

Et Voilá! Some lipstick and a LBD and you are red carpet ready!

Do you crave salon worthy hair? Here is a step-by-step guide to getting the best blow-out at home. You’ll need a blow dryer with a nozzle, detangler, a protective serum, a medium to large round brush (depending on how much hair you have) , styling oil and a clip.

Spray de-tangler (like Silken Child Leave-In Detangler) onto wet hair so that it’s protected as you brush it out—always remember, hair is its most fragile when wet. Applying a de-tangler right out of the shower is best; using this type of spray on hair that is in the process of air drying will cause the hair to feel sticky once it’s dry.

Using a blow dryer with the nozzle on, blow your bangs or any stubborn cowlicks that you have first, so that you can control these sections before they start to. I like to pull the rest of my hair back while doing this so that I can focus on the front section.

Once you’ve tamed the front section, let the rest of your hair down and begin to take a little moisture out by blow drying; you’re goal in this step is to end with evenly damp hair. It’s important to keep the dryer moving and to not focus on one section for too long—you don’t want some places to end up dry while others are still wet.

Now apply a small amount of protective serum to the bottom two-thirds of hair (I use Redken Smooth Lock Heat Glide); applying this on damp hair before you begin to use a round brush while protect hair from damage.

Divide hair into two sections; one section at the base of the neck, and one section on top. Clip the top section up so you can focus on blowing out the bottom half. Always aim the blow dryer down, in the same direction that the hair grows, to minimize frizz. Using a round brush to pull sections down will help to smooth hair.

Once the bottom section of hair is completely dry, let down the top section. When drying the top, it’s important to remember to get even tension. Also if sections have started to air dry, wet them down a little so that you can re-dry them using the round brush and blow dryer. This will allow you to control how the hair dries and prevent frizz. Be sure to gently comb through any knots before using the round brush on them.

After your hair is completely dry, gather hair at your crown onto the round brush and aim the blow dryer on this section to add lift at the roots.

Once hair has cooled, go back in with the nozzle off of the blow dryer and flip your head over; begin blowing hair on a cool setting to eliminate frizz and to create a more natural look.

To polish off your look, run styling oil (like Organix Repairing Awapuhi Ginger Dry Styling Oil) through the ends of hair.
